Petwood Garden memories

Thomas Burkitt was born in January 1892 in Calcethorpe, a small hamlet 5 miles outside of Louth, Lincolnshire to Thomas Burkitt senior, a Farm Labourer. Young Thomas didn’t appear to want to work in the fields as his father had done and by the time of the 1911 census at the age of 19, he was working at Petwood as a Gardener alongside his brother Harry aged 25.

Thanks to unique permission from the RAF Museum Hendon, one of the most famous Victoria Crosses in British military history - that of Wing Commander Guy Gibson, Dambuster - will go on display in Lincolnshire in January 2020.
